Island Broker Enters First Summer Since Business Merger

One million people have visited the Web site of Lila Delman Real Estate over the past year, said Liz Brazil, the newest broker at the company.

“I have the opportunity to speak with people all over the world,” she said. “Especially people who love Jamestown.”

Brazil worked in the corporate world for nine years with Johnson & Johnson Orthopedics as a design drafter and product information specialist before becoming a realtor. She obtained her real estate license in 2001 and worked for a year as a salesperson before becoming a licensed broker. “The broker license is the next step and allows one to have their own business,” Brazil said.

…This summer, according to Brazil, there should be no shortages of “good deals” in Jamestown.

In 2003, she started her own company — Jamestown Rental Realty — which quickly became one of the premier rental agencies on the island. Brazil later merged her company with Lila Delman in October.

“The addition of Liz to the Lila Delman Real Estate Jamestown office has immediately enhanced our ability to serve all of our client’s rental and sales needs on Jamestown,”Delman said.

She currently heads up their rental department in the Jamestown office.

“I wanted to take my business to the next level,” said BrazilLila Delman Real Estate is a well-run company with name recognition, she said. Part of that recognition comes from the recent purchase of Gray Craig Manor House sold by actor Nicolas Cage. The 27-acre Middletown estate sold for $6.2 million and Melanie Delman of Lila Delman Real Estatewas the real estate agent.

Lila Delman Real Estate was founded in 1964 and is an international brokerage firm. The firm brings buyers, sellers, developers and investors together globally. Melanie Delman, Lila’s daughter, took over the company in 1988. A few years later, partner John Hodnettjoined Melanie.  Hodnett  is now a principal broker at the firm. Together, Delman andHodnett increased their Rhode Island presence by opening up offices in Watch Hill, Narragansett, Newport and Block Island in addition to their Jamestown location.

Lila Delman Real Estate is great,” said Brazil. “The company is full of opportunity and it’s good to work with other professionals in the office.”

According to Brazil, the rental market is currently strong. She said that she is receiving new listings ranging from winter, summer and year-round properties. Sales are strong because many houses are getting listed for the spring. This brings the inventory levels up. Brazil said pending sales are closing. “People love Jamestown and are willing to pay a little more to enjoy island life.”

A career as a real estate agent at this time can be challenging. Yet, it offers the professional person the ability to represent clients and make their personal goals happen.

Brazil moved to Jamestown permanently from her Norwood, Mass. home in 1992. Her parents had summered in Jamestown when Brazil was a child in a house her parents owned, located on Green Lane. Her parents purchased the home for $8,000 in 1960 but later sold it in 1970.

“It was a 16-room house,” said Brazil. “It was our summer home and I loved my days in Jamestown.”

One year after finally moving back to Jamestown, Brazil met her husband, Bill, in 1993.Brazil recalls the two lived parallel lives on the island. Bill summered on the north end of Jamestown while Liz summered downtown. “Once we met,” said Brazil, “the rest was history.”

The couple has been married for 18 years and has one child, Jarrett.  Jarrett is 13 years old and is in the eighth grade at Lawn Avenue School.

Brazil describes her island life as “the average American family taking care of our home and family.”

Her mother, Sunny Hocutt, a former columnist for the Jamestown Press, lives on the island and the two are in daily contact. Bill is recovering from a spinal fusion operation and the couple makes time for taking walks together. Brazil enjoys yoga and exercise in general.

“I can not wait to get out in the yard and start raking and tending to flower beds,” she said.

The Brazil’s have a 95-pound dog named Simon and a cat named Jack, which the family inherited from Brazil’s late dad. The Brazil family also enjoys an above ground pool in their backyard. “It brings us great joy in the summer” Brazil said. The extended family enjoys their time together living on the north end of the island. “It’s quiet. We have space to spread out.”

Brazil foresees a busy time for the upcoming sales and rental markets in Jamestown this summer. According to her, many vacationers and summer residents will be back. In the summer, Jamestown becomes full of life and a great place to be. “Everybody is looking for a bargain now,” said Brazil. The housing market on the island and surrounding areas has priced properties accordingly…

…This summer, according to Brazil, there should be no shortages of “good deals” in Jamestown.
