Club offers star-quality luxury on Narragansett Bay

Boston Business Journal, May 1-7, 2009 by Teri Borseti, Special To The Journal

The Carnegie Abbey Country Club in Portsmouth, RI., became a world-class destination as soon as it opened in 2000, drawing high-profile celebs and former U.S. presidents.  Townhouses with great views of Narragansett Bay were quickly snapped up to serve as second or third residences.

The double unit known as "Defender" and "Defender II" (all units have nautical  names)

was purchased by actress Anne Archer and husband, television producer/director Terry Jastrow.  The couple enjoy the location but don't get to spend much time there, so they've listed the property at $1.1 million with Melanie Delman of Lila Delman Real Estate in Newport.

"People who buy here buy into a whole lifestyle that includes golf, sailing, equestrian and tennis.  There's a  European spa, restaurant, lounge, pool and gym.  So residents don't even have to leave the compound if they prefer privacy," Delman said.

On the first floor of the Adirondack-style building that houses the units is a great hall with a 35-foot, two-sided fieldstone fireplace and soaring ceiling.  the comfy furniture makes the common space a great place to meet friends in any season.  There's a member's lounge, dining room and a huge porch out back that faces the 18th hole of the Scottish links and the ocean beyond.

At the two-story Archer home there are two complete bedroom suites, a family room with fireplace, living room, well-equipped contemporary kitchen, wet bar and two large verandas.  Skylights and windows abound, filling the space with lots of natural light.  Shutters in a loft-style bedroom can be opened to face a palladium window and instant water views.

"The sunsets here are dramatic.  This is the place to be at the end of the day," Delman said. The unit comes fully furnished and there are numerous photos of Archer with such stars as Michael Douglas, Tommy Lee Jones, Samuel L. Jackson and Dennis Hopper.

In addition to its scenic location and numerous clubhouse amenities, residents of Carnegie Abbey can feel like they're on an all-inclusive vacation--for as long as they like.

Concierge service, housekeeping, room service and a kid's camp make it easy to relax, and for those who like to stay busy the club always has something going on.  Regular features include a family night with a different theme every week, bag piper sunsets on weekends and golf tournaments, said Jeanne Murray, dining room manager at Carnegie Abbey.

Carnegie Abbey is located just minutes by car or boat from Newport's downtown area.

Residents must pay a fee to become a member of the clubhouse, and there are several membership packages available.  The residence is pet-friendly, and has ample parking for residents and guests.
