SWANHURST MANOR HOUSE BELLEVUE AVENUE This elegant and historic home was built in 1851, as one of the first of twelve Newport Mansions established along famed Bellevue Avenue. Living in Ohio, but New Englanders by birth, Judge Gustavus Swan and his wife were pleased to return to New England and spend their summers in Newport in a home they called Swanhurst: “Swan” for their name and “hurst” meaning a wooded hill. The house was stone and constructed by Alexander MacGregor who had built Fort Adams and the Newport Artillery Company Armory.
Privately owned, The Swanhurst Manor House has been lovingly restored to its grandeur of years past and sits on 1.56 acres of classically landscaped grounds. The foyer is a sweeping hall with classic stairway and massive doorways to first floor rooms. The interior walls are elaborately detailed while the windows are true nineteenth century style. The double living room is warmed by elaborate detailing and two fireplaces and floor to ceiling windows. The formal dining room with fireplace, is of a scale and detail appropriate for a Newport Mansion. Herringbone hardwood floors add to the richness of warm style. The main level includes a gentleman’s library of rich wood paneling with fireplace and a sitting room, opening to a covered veranda with tile flooring and classic columns.
The recent gourmet kitchen is one of the distinguishing features of this home. The work areas include granite countertops, custom cabinets, three sinks, premier appliances, dramatic lighting, and great storage. The kitchen is convenient, classic and clever including such items as a built in espresso/cappuccino maker.
Six bedroom suites span the entire second level with three full baths. Each elegantly styled bedroom suite is warm, spacious and comfortable. The generous master suite with fireplace and new master bath, create an enclave of comfort and style. Convenience, elegance and comfort are the cornerstones of this home.
The mechanics in the house have been completely modernized. The heating system, hydro-air, has been replaced. The home enjoys central air conditioning. Domestic hot water is also fired by gas. The residence is protected by a central station alarm system. Dramatic lighting displays the elegance and old world tradition of this grand Bellevue Avenue estate home.
